Sworn Marine Surveyors

Tanido B.V. is an independent marine surveying company established in 1986 which provides excellent service to the shipping industry. Our clients can gain and make savings by appointing us. The Tanido surveyors have been delivering accurate service for the past 30 years and we strive to keep on delivering this service for many more. Almost all of our surveyors have a technical nautical background (some sailed as merchant navy officers) and are trained to protect the interests of our clients in a professional way. We are in fact the actual eyes and ears of our clients. The qualities of a Tanido surveyor, in addition to his skills, are honesty, thoroughness, accuracy, commitment and assertiveness.

Tanido offers the following unique services to the shipping industry:

Lightering of Bulk Carriers

During the loading and discharging of bulk carriers the maximum draught, trim, heel and the stresses of the
hull are important issues. The Tanido surveyor monitors these aspects by making use of our specially designed
devices (some are also used in land measuring). Our instruments can be used to measure the draughts with
an accuracy of 1 millimetre in a swell of up to 3 metres. Using this unique approach we help the crew to load or
discharge their vessel safer, faster and more efficiently and therefore our client achieves optimal savings on
time and logistical expenses.

Draught surveys

To determine the exact bulk cargo weight on a loaded or discharged ship. Tanido applies the Archimedes principle to the calculation of displacement in compliance with the vessel’s lines plan. For this calculation an advanced computer program was designed in close collaboration with the Technical University in Delft. The program has been approved and accepted by the major classification societies. Commissioned by one of the largest oil companies, we even performed draught surveys on VLCC crude tankers with our highly advanced devices. We achieved an accuracy of 0.1%. This accomplishment has not yet been achieved by anybody else. In addition to our accuracy, our approach allows us to complete the survey on these vessels much quicker. Our clients appreciate the fact that a huge bulk carrier can sail within 15 minutes after ‘completed discharging’ or ‘completed loading’.

Bunkering

More and more ship owners and charterers request the expertise of Tanido when their vessel needs to be
supplied with fuel. This is true, especially with the cost of fuel today and the increasing charges. Our surveyors are trained to perform the bunker survey strictly according to the SS-600 code of practice. We work with leading laboratories for the analysis of the fuel samples. We stay on board and supervise the bunkering process. Your vessel (and your finances) make it worthwhile for having Tanido attend your bunker delivery.

Condition surveys

If a charterer hires a vessel, then it is very important to inspect the ship thoroughly for any (stevedoring) damage. The parties involved also want to know what the exact quantity of fuel oil is upon delivery or redelivery of the vessel. The Tanido surveyors measure all of the fuel tanks and also inspect hold after hold for any damages. Their findings are then compiled into a comprehensive report for the parties involved in the on- and/or off-hire of the vessel.

Damage prevention surveys

It’s a fact that nowadays everything in the shipping industry is becoming bigger and faster. During the
discharging of bulk carriers at bulk terminals we see a lot of damages sustained to these vessels. Repairs of these damages cost time and that equals money. We are often asked by charterers to supervise the discharging operations. We then work closely together with the terminal staff and the crew of the vessel and liaise on the best possible way to prevent any damages. Appointing Tanido means that we keep your costs of damage repairs and time losses to a minimum.

Laser calibration of inland barges

The same applies here as in our draught surveys. In contrast to the traditional guesswork of “gauging” freeboards, we also literally follow the Archimedes principle in our calculations. For the measurement of the freeboard we use a very accurate and calibrated laser device. This ensures that our client knows the exact cargo weight that has been loaded or discharged. We have tested this method in detail on fuel barges being loaded by Shell in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Consultancy

The Tanido surveyor has more knowledge of vessels than any other and, in particular, how things should work
on board. You can consult us on any conceivable loading problem. A few examples: cleanliness inspections of cargo tanks and holds. Surveying, sampling and analysing of liquid and dry bulk cargo. Stability issues. Prevention of cargo shortage claims. Securing and lashing of deck cargo. Handling of heavy lifts. Towage approval warranty surveys. Testing of hatch covers. Surveys of cargo and stevedoring damage. Pre-sale & purchase condition surveys and in-company seminars.
